| 2002: Lionel had arthroscopic knee surgery on August 13 and missed the opener against South Carolina. He returned to action against Cal and then made his first career start in the Aggies win over New Mexico.
Career: Apineru enters fall camp as the #2 nose tackle behind Joe Olivo. He should see significant action this season.
2001 (Freshman): As a true freshman, Apineru played in all 12 games and finished with six total tackles. He had a career high three tackles against Arkansas State (11/10) and one tackle each against Oregon State (9/8), Kansas State (9/22) and Tulsa (10/6).
High School: Lionel attended Barstow High School and was a star defensive lineman. He also wrestled and was the No. 1 ranked heavyweight wrestler in California.
Personal: Lionel Jesse Apineru was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and is the son of of Lafo and Hattie Apineru. One of his cousins is NFL star Junior Seau of the San Diego Chargers. Lionel has a brown belt in judo and is majoring in Computer Science.
