The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Southeastern Louisiana football coach Hal Mumme has accepted the job of head football coach at New Mexico State University.

The newspaper quotes Southeastern Louisiana quarterback Martin Hankins as saying Mumme informed his players yesterday about his decision to move to Las Cruces. Mumme led the Southeastern Louisiana Lions for two seasons.

He compiled a 12-and-eleven record and a seven-and-four mark last season. The NMSU job opened when Tony Samuel was fired November 24th after eight seasons and a 34-and-57 record.

Mumme is known for his prolific passing offense and many still think he is the "next Steve Spurrier."

Mumme was the head football coach at the University of Kentucky for four years.

Mumme rebuilt a Wildcat program that had flatlined. In its first year under Mumme's guidance, Kentucky jumped from being ranked 109th nationally in total offense to sixth. In 1999 he helped the Wildcats to their first New Year's Day bowl in nearly 50 years.

He resigned in 2001 amid an N-C-A-A investigation that uncovered recruiting violations during his tenure.

However Mumme rebounded 18 months later, taking over at Division 1-AA Southeastern Louisiana, a school that had eliminated its football program in 1985. The Lions went 7-4 last season. Mumme compiled a 12-11 record at SLU after going 20-26 at Kentucky.
