Tyler Johnson's three-pointer at the 18:51 mark of the second half matched Fresno State's largest lead (two points) at that point of the game. The Bulldogs would force a five-second call on Pacific's subsequent inbounds, and Kevin Foster added another three-pointer to give the ‘Dogs a 41-36 lead.
FS couldn't shake the Tigers as the ‘Dogs continually missed opportunities to build on its five-point lead. UOP hung around the next 14 minutes eventually taking a 57-56 lead with 3:55 remaining in the game.
After falling behind 24-15 with less than nine minutes remaining before the half, Fresno State battled back to take a 31-30 lead in the final minutes. Kevin Foster made two free throws to tie it at 34 with a minute to play. Pacific couldn't score on its possession shooting an air ball with 31 seconds remaining, and the Bulldogs took control for the final shot. But Foster's 15-foot jumper was no good.
Both teams shot 56% in the first half, including each making 2-of-5 from beyond the arc. The Tigers attempted nine more shots than FS (25 to 16), but the ‘Dogs made up for it at the charity stripe. Fresno State was 14-of-17 from the free throw line. UOP shot 100% clip but shot just four free throws.
The Bulldogs took an early 9-8 lead at the 14:40 mark before UOP took control the next 10 minutes of the game.
True freshman Marvelle Harris had an opportunity for a rare four-point play after being fouled intentionally on a made layup. He made just one of two free throws, moreover, the Bulldogs failed to capitalize on the subsequent possession as well to build some momentum after taking its largest lead of the half, 12-10.
UOP scored the next five before Allen Huddleston's three-pointer tied the game, but the Tigers used a 9-0 run to regain the lead.
Fresno State next travels to San Luis Obispo on Monday night to face Cal Poly. Tip Off is set for 7 p.m.
